A December Lament

A DECEMBER LAMENT

This happens to me once a year

I smile but I lose a tear

I was sure you would leave me

You’d always deceived me

Wasn’t life simple, happy, and free

When I knew that you would

Be

I smiled as I climbed in your chair

And pulled your cotton white hair

You’re the first I believed in

Defying all reason

I learned about giving myself

Away to whatever is

Felt

You came when I slept in my bed

At least that’s what everyone said

What else said was untrue

Is there more left to undo

Is there anyone who can say why

I was taught to believe

A lie
